HOW TO USE THE ETMS |
USER HANDBOOK Get acquainted with the ETMS. The Data Analysis Tool presents the spatial distribution of ETMS indicators in a simple user friendly way, including pre-defined regional typologies and their development in time. The Territorial Trends Tool displays ETMS indicators analytically over time differentiated by different regions typologies. It includes regionalised forecasts by ESPON ET2050 project. |
SYSTEM OF INDICATORS ETMS indicators comprises 36 indicators covering 5 basic dimensions: Economic competitiveness; Environmental qualities; Human capital; Social inclusion; Access to territory and services. Also it is exposed the Policy Context under which each of the ETMS Compass Indicators is working on. They are organised under 6 priorities of the Territorial Agenda 2020. |
SYNTHESIS OF TYPOLOGIES Indicators are classify in data analysis on maps module and territorial trends module. They are analysed in NUTS and LAU2 level.
SAMPLE APPLICATIONS ETMS indicators are 30 indicators data organised in 5 topic areas (Economy, Environment, Human capital, Social inclusion ans accessibility. The time series are between 2000 to 2012.

ABOUT THE ETMS |
AIM OF THE ETMS The aim of this project is to develop a simple, easy understandable and policy relevant European Territorial Monitoring System, covering the entire ESPON space, capable of continuous interpretation, assessment and communication of territorial development trends in relation to policy objectives related to Territorial Cohesion (in particular the EUROPE 2020 Strategy and the Territorial Agenda 2020).
CONCEPTUAL APPROACH ETMS must be a practical and operational system. A Monitoring System can be useful to provide policy-support only if it is designed to be focused on most relevant spatial policy objectives. Hence, it is necessary to identify first the main policy issues, priorities and objectives that interest policymakers and stakeholders, now and in the coming years, and to define indicators policy-relevant to these questions. |
ABOUT THE CONSORTIUM |
The ETMS has been developed by MCRIT, UAB, University of Geneva, Nordregio and GISAT within the framework of ESPON Programme.
MCRIT MCRIT is a multidisciplinary firm based in Barcelona specialised on strategic planning, with special emphasis on spatial development, transport planning and European policy. MCRIT develops advanced information forecast and evaluation systems. |
UAB UAB (Autonomous University of Barcelona) hosts since 2001 the European Topic Centre on Spatial Information and Analysis, which supports the work of the European Environment Agency in several areas related to LU/LC, Ecosystems, Urban, Coast, and especially everything related to spatial databases management and analysis. |
UNIVERSITY OF GENEVA University of Geneva. The department of geography and environment has built a number of collaborations within and beyond Geneva, and is currently focused on research projects related to political boundaries, territoriality and territorial development. |
NORDREGIO Nordregio is an applied-research institute specialized in comparative international studies dealing with regional and spatial development. Nordregio has dedicated personnel dealing with statistical analysis, mapping and database compilation. Since its grounding in 1997, Nordregio has developed a good track-record on the elaboration and compilation of database of policy-relevant indicators at multiple territorial scales |
